E365 -- Live Earth!!! Anybody make it to one of the concerts? Well, according to a whole bunch of people, they were off the hook! Check out some of the pics...
With 150 artists, nine cities, seven continents, one message was clear: watch our program. Beyond anything else, in fact, it seemed to pan out not as a serious approach to climate change, but rather one big NBC joygasm.
Ok, fair enough. But I am not nearly clued up enough on the actual implications that this never-seen-before set of concerts will (or will not) have on the earth. And besides, I'm the one posting "today's global warming headlines" in every story that goes out on this site.
Whether or not the intentions of the NBC bosses, MSN and anyone who's got some kind of financial investment in this project being a success (yes, including concert ticket-holders) isn't a load of money-making baloney, at least there's finally talk of a shift of opinions. At least, finally, there's a improving chance that YOU (not "humanity -- too vague) will accept responsibility for what's going on.
The most skeptic of individuals may disagree that there is even a problem, but the growing concern about the way we are living our lives is taking over. For me, it's not really even about the physical effects of polluting the earth's atmosphere, or the ongoing refusal to admit that it's time to change. It's about seeing the way I am currently conducting my affairs as just one possible method. For me, it's about admitting that I am a very small part of a big machine.
And regardless thereof, my actions (and inactions) have effects that I may not taste directly; for example, being too lazy to recycle. But they will certainly affect me indirectly. By contributing to the acceptability of an apathetic mindset, I am indirectly contributing to a generally apathetic society, which will not necessarily look after my best interests if the going gets tough.
In other words, see the bigger picture.
As for the concerts, having big names like Madonna, the Beastie Boys and AFI take to the stage (for whatever reason) is pretty cool. Maybe we can all learn to use our influence to spread our own philosophy -- whatever it may be.
