Round 5 Of The BKSA Grand Prix Rocks Balmedie!
E365> Kitesurfing - Friday August 31 2007
E365 -- Well, it was that time again. What time, you ask? Time for the British Kitesurfers to strut their stuff in the fifth round of the BKSA Grand Prix, that's what time!
When you're running a kitesurfing comp there's only two things you really, really hope for. Sun and wind. Well, the sun shone & the wind arrived on Friday at Balmedie beach to provide a perfect start to the weekend.
Scottish rider Helen Thompson impressed on the day. She was 400 points behind leader Johara Sykes Davis at the start of the pro womens heat and knew she had to pull out all the stops. Nothing less than three wins in the remaining three events would do for her if she was gonna walk away with this year's title. Well, sporting her new board featuring the Thompson Tartan, Helen pulled F16s, S Bends, Rallies to toe, Kiteloops & Backloops to finish in 1st place closing the gap by 140 points.
Sweet, Helen, just two more victories and you're stylin'!
In the men's, Sam Light took his 1st win in the competition so far to place him 2nd overall and 310 points behind current British Champion, Lewis Crathern. Sam produced some awesome riding with S Bends to Blind, S Bends to Blind Switch & Big Kiteloop Handle Passes. Despite Nose Grabs to Blind off Kicker, Rallie Boschmosis & Grabbed Slim Chance, Lewis had to settle for 3rd place but still leads overall with 4146 points.
Saturday proved disappointing for wind but the BKSA had contingency plans. Armed with their new toys, Jet Skis, Ringos and quad bikes, the BKSA were able to keep riders and the general public entertained with ringo battles. After a day spent resting on the beach, riders were ready for the legendary party night and were not disappointed!
The remaining rounds at Littlehampton 14-16th September and Hayling 5-7th October should be very exciting and well worth watching. Can Helen pip Johara? Can Lewis stay the course? Only time will tell.
