The Save Vetchs Beach Slalom has been created by passionate windsurfers in order to regenerate the sport of windsurfing, said Kwa Zulu Natal boardsailing association chairman James Thorpe.

The Slalom Challenge has 3 divisions: mens open, ladies open and vintage division. The vintage division is open to competitors whom are windsurfing on pre 1990 windsurfers, with former Top Vintage Board sailors Clem Jones, Alwin Van Breda keen to reactivate their former rivalry.
Favourites to take the mens open are James Thorpe (Pietermaritzburg) Shaun Pretorius (South Coast), Grant Embleton (Durban) and Isaak Brohlken (Westville).
Windsurfers are protesting the proposed development of the Durban Point Small Craft Harbour which threatens to jeopardize the future of their sport in the area.
We have also added vintage equipment and a pre-99 session which is subject to the wind conditions of course. The contest is being run by the paddle ski club in Warner beach, said Larmont.
